Best Home Golf Simulator Build for $1,500-5,000
Short answer: if you want a full simulator with a screen and projector, we'd start with a Rapsodo MLM2PRO DIY build at about $3,747. It uses the phone or tablet you already own instead of a PC. If you only want a practice bay (net, mat and launch monitor), a Garmin Approach R10 build comes in at $1,598.94. If you'd rather buy everything from one company, the SkyTrak ST MAX Standard Studio Package is $4,195, but it needs an Apple M1-or-newer iPad or Mac, or a Windows PC, for the software.
All prices below were checked on manufacturer or retailer pages in October 2026. Prices change often, especially during sales, so click through before you buy. Every room spec is based on manufacturer specs. We haven't tested these builds hands-on.
Before you pick a build, check your ceiling. Our guide to how much ceiling height you need for a home golf simulator covers swing clearance, room width and ball-to-screen distance in detail.

Build 1: Garmin Approach R10 practice bay ($1,598.94)
This is the cheapest way to hit real balls with real data at home. There's no screen or projector, so you watch your shots on your phone or tablet.
| Part | Product | Price (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Launch monitor | Garmin Approach R10 | $499.99 |
| Net | Rain or Shine SwingNet Pro XL (8'H x 8'W x 3'D, side barriers and ball return) | $599.00 (regular $699) |
| Mat | Carl's HotShot Golf Mat System, 4x5 mat with Standard insert | $499.95 |
| Device | Your own phone or tablet | $0 |
| Total | $1,598.94 |
Do you need a PC? No. Garmin's getting-started video shows the R10 pairing with the Garmin Golf app on your phone, and the app runs the sim modes. You only need a Windows PC if you add GSPro, which GSPro says runs on Windows 10 or 11 only.
Room size, based on manufacturer specs: Garmin's owner's manual says to place the R10 6 to 8 ft behind the tee, with the tee at least 8 ft from the net indoors. In the getting-started video, Garmin lists a minimum indoor space of 15 ft long x 8 ft wide x 8 ft high. Add the net's 3 ft of depth, per Rain or Shine, and leave room to swing behind the unit.
Yearly software: The Garmin Golf membership is $99.99/yr or $9.99/month, per Garmin's store page.
Build 2: Rapsodo MLM2PRO DIY simulator (about $3,746.79)
This is the cheapest full simulator we could put together from linked parts: enclosure, impact screen, projector and mat. The MLM2PRO runs on your phone or tablet, so there's no PC in the budget.
| Part | Product | Price (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Launch monitor | Rapsodo MLM2PRO | $549.99 (regular $699.99) |
| Enclosure and screen | Carl's Place DIY Golf Enclosure Kit with Impact Screen, Standard screen, 7'7" x 10' | $1,149.95 |
| Frame | Carl's Place Pipes for DIY Enclosure Kit, 7'7" x 10' | $389.95 |
| Mat | Carl's HotShot Golf Mat System, 4x5 mat with Standard insert (the lowest configuration; bigger mats cost more) | From $499.95 |
| Projector | Optoma ZW350ST (WXGA 1280 x 800, 3,600 lumens, 0.521 throw ratio, laser) | $909.00 (regular $1,299) |
| Mount | Carl's Place Flush Projector Mount | $247.95 |
| Device | Your own phone or tablet | $0 |
| Total | About $3,746.79 |
Do you need a PC? No. Rapsodo says the MLM2PRO pairs with Apple or Android phones and tablets, and you can send the picture to a projector over HDMI. Rapsodo's FAQ says the MLM2PRO works with most versions of iOS and Android and tells you to check the app store listing for current requirements. A Windows PC only comes in if you want the Rapsodo Golf for PC app, Rapsodo Studios or GSPro. Rapsodo says its PC app is Windows-only.
Room size, based on manufacturer specs: Rapsodo says you need "a little more than 14 total feet": 8 ft from ball to net, plus 6.5-8.5 ft behind the ball for the unit. Taller players may need to move it farther back. Add about a foot behind the screen, which Carl's Place builds into its 15 ft minimum depth. For width, Carl's Place lists 10 ft minimum with an offset hitting area and 14 ft+ for centered hitting.
Projector placement: Optoma's ZW350ST spec page lists a fixed 0.521:1 throw ratio and a projection distance of 11.81" to 133.86". Shop Indoor Golf explains the math: lens-to-screen distance equals throw ratio times image width. Its compare table lists a 6'4" mounting distance for its own SIG10 enclosure, not the Carl's Place kit, so measure your own image width before you mount it.
Yearly software: Rapsodo's FAQ lists Core at $199.99/yr and Rapsodo Studios at $399.99/yr, billed yearly with no monthly option. The MLM2PRO comes with a 21-day Core trial. Without a membership you get Practice mode only. Courses, ranges, spin numbers and third-party apps need Core.
Build 3: SkyTrak ST MAX Standard Studio Package ($4,195)
This is one order from one company, with an enclosure, screen, mat and projector included. It's the only build here with a launch monitor beside the ball, so you don't lose depth behind you.
| Part | Product | Price (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Launch monitor, enclosure, screen, mat, projector | SkyTrak ST MAX Standard Studio Package (ST MAX, steel-frame enclosure with impact screen, 5x5 hitting mat, ZW350ST short-throw projector) | $4,195.00 (regular $5,495.00) |
| Mount and cables | Projector mounting hardware for the 10', 12' and 13' Studios is included, per SkyTrak. The 8' Studio uses a floor mount. | Included |
| Device | Your own M1-or-newer iPad or Mac, or a Windows PC | $0 |
| Total | $4,195.00 |
What device you need: SkyTrak's package page lists a Windows 10 or 11 PC with an Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM and an NVIDIA GTX 1650 or AMD Radeon 580 as the minimum. It also says macOS and iOS need an Apple M1 chip or better, and that no iPhone currently works with course play. If you don't own one of those, a PC like the $1,999 Shop Indoor Golf sim PC would push this build to $6,194, which puts it in our $5,000-10,000 guide.
Room size, based on manufacturer specs: SkyTrak's plan-your-space page lists the Studio 10 (10' W x 8'6" H x 5'4" D) as needing a minimum room of 11 ft wide x 16 ft deep x 9 ft high. The Studio 8 (8' W x 7'5" H x 4' D) needs a minimum of 8.5 ft wide x 15 ft deep x 8 ft high, but SkyTrak notes a standard golfer needs at least a 9 ft ceiling to swing a driver.
Yearly software: SkyTrak's membership page lists Core: Foresight at $299.99/yr, Core: Trackman at $349.99/yr and Elite at $599.99/yr. SkyTrak's membership guide lists Essential at $129.99/yr (practice tools, no course play). The package includes a 14-day trial.

Hidden costs to budget for
- Software after the trial ends: Trials run 21 days (Rapsodo) and 14 days (SkyTrak package). Garmin's page lists the membership price but we didn't find the trial length on it. After the trial, you'll pay the yearly rates above.
- A PC, if you want GSPro or don't have a compatible device: GSPro needs Windows 10 or 11 and lists an RTX 3060-class card for 1080p. The Shop Indoor Golf sim PC is $1,999, and Shop Indoor Golf says all sales on it are final.
- Third-party software on top of the membership: GSPro is $250/yr. Its pricing page says Rapsodo MLM2PRO users also need a Rapsodo membership, and Rapsodo says that means Core.
- A projector mount: $247.95 for the Carl's Place Flush Projector Mount in Build 2. SkyTrak's 10', 12' and 13' Studios include mounting hardware.
- Screen wear: SkyTrak's warranty calls the impact screen "a consumable that will wear out over time" and recommends clean, unmarked balls to make it last.
- Returns: SkyTrak charges a 20% restocking fee on returns within 30 days. Rapsodo offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
- Video adapter and HDMI cable: Rapsodo says to use Lightning to HDMI for iOS devices and USB-C to HDMI for Android. Apple's Lightning Digital AV Adapter is $49 and its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter is $69, and Apple says both need an HDMI cable, sold separately. Check Apple's compatibility list for your iPhone or iPad. We didn't price an Android adapter or the HDMI cable.
- Sales tax: None of the totals above include it.
Which build should you pick?
- Pick Build 1 (Garmin) if you mainly want practice data and can live without a big screen. It's the only build under $2,000.
- Pick Build 2 (Rapsodo) if you want a full simulator for under $4,000 and already own a phone or tablet. You'll need 14+ ft of depth for the launch monitor setup alone.
- Pick Build 3 (SkyTrak) if you want one order and a launch monitor beside the ball, and you already own an M1-or-newer iPad or Mac or a compatible Windows PC.
How these builds step up to $5,000-10,000
Each build here has a bigger version in our $5,000-10,000 guide:
- Build 2 to Rapsodo DIY ($6,835.79): Same launch monitor, enclosure and frame, with a 1080p BenQ AH500ST projector ($1,999) instead of the ZW350ST and a dedicated $1,999 sim PC.
- Build 3 to SkyTrak Premium Studio ($6,694): The Premium package ($4,695) adds putting turf, and that guide budgets a $1,999 sim PC.
- Build 1: That guide has no Garmin R10 build. The closest step up from a net-only practice bay is the Uneekor EYE MINI LITE build ($9,814.77), with a camera unit beside the ball, a Carl's Place enclosure, a projector and a PC that meets Uneekor's requirements.
Whichever you choose, take a few slow driver swings in your actual room before ordering. If you're tight on height, read our ceiling height guide first.
